Wednesday Night Bible Study Resumes

Just a reminder that Christ Reformed's Wednesday Night Bible Study returns this week.  I've been working my way through a series on the person and work of Christ, and we taking up the nature of Christ's atonement (as part of his priestly work and office).

It would be a good time to jump in, if you live in the area and are interested.  The study begins at 7:30 p.m. (but we open the doors at 7:00 p.m. for prayer and discussion).  We are usually finished by 8:45 p.m.

Gospel Focused

There is a lot of talk these days about “living the gospel” or “being the gospel,” as if we ourselves are the good news. Some even say that the church is an extension of Christ’s incarnation, as if Jesus came to provide the moral example or template for us to complete. There is only one redeemer and head of the church. To him alone all authority is given in heaven and on earth. On this program the hosts encourage us to put the focus back on Christ and his gospel as they continue their new year long series on The Great Commission.

Who Said That?

"Everybody should know that we have for our mission to convert the world--including the inhabitants of the United States--the people of the cities, and the people of the country, the officers of the navy and the marines, commanders of the army, the Legislature, the Senate, the Cabinet, the President, and all!"

Leave your guess in the comments section below.  Please, no google searches or cheating.  Answer to follow soon.

Why Make Predictions for 2011? God Has Already Told Pat Robertson What Will Happen

Pat's been up on the mountain again . . .

The word is to pay off your debts, invest in CBN and Regent, plan to witness more extraordinary miracles (I am assuming Pat is referring to the 700 Club), and be sure to watch out for great upheaval in 2012.

Oh, and the person elected president in 2012 is going to be very sorry they won.

Nothing about the AL East?

Upcoming Events at Christ Reformed Church in January, 2011

On Wednesday, January 12, our Wednesday night Bible study resumes @ 7:00 p.m.  I am currently covering the person and work of Christ.

On Friday, January 21, J. V. Fesko will be our special guest for our winter 2011 Academy Authors Forum.  Dr. Fesko (from Westminster Seminary California) will be discussing his outstanding new book, Word, Water and Spirit (Reformation Heritage 2010).

On Friday, January 28, the Academy returns, with Ken Samples teaching a new series on his forthcoming book, Christianity's Seven Dangerous Ideas.

The Great Commission

On this edition of the program the hosts introduce their new theme for 2011: The Great Commission. In this important mission statement, Jesus does not begin with the imperative, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” Rather, he first tells his disciples that, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Christ has already accomplished redemption, therefore the great commission is not a plan for us to execute, or an ideal toward which we strive. We are not extensions of the incarnation, and our work is not redemptive. Rather Jesus has conquered sin, death and hell, and calls us as his ambassadors to announce this good news to the world.

Any Predictions for the New Year?

Happy New Year!

Ordinarily, I spend the day with my sons watching college football (and overeating).  But given the way the BCS has ruined New Year's Day college bowl games, we'll probably watch the Three Stooges marathon instead (you know, in protest).

I'm also conducting a wedding later today for a couple from church.  I've never done a New Years Day wedding before (but it is 1-1-11).

Is anyone willing to go out on a limb and make a few predictions for the coming year?  If you wish, leave them in the comments section below.  Given my track-record at making such predictions, I'll play it safe and predict that I'll get older and balder in the coming year.

Finally, I wish you all a very prosperous and healthy New Year!
