This Week's White Horse Inn

An Interview with Christian Smith

Michael Horton recently had the opportunity to talk with Notre Dame sociologist Christian Smith, author of Soul Searching and Souls in Transition. Dr. Smith coined the phrase "Moralistic Therapeutic Deism" to describe the faith of most religious teens, and the religion he fears of their parents as well. In this interview, Mike talks to Dr. Smith about his various writing projects, his view of youth ministry, and his suggestions for the way forward.

I wanted to point out the Kendra Casey Dean comment listed as point #5 on the WHI discussion questions. If the family is the place to learn Luther's Small Catechism, how do we reconcile this with the idea that the church is where we should hear the Word preached. To be sure, sociologically, this seems the way to go. I wonder, however, with such glaring problems with Evangelical and Main stream doctrine, whether the desired result would be achieved at this point.
