Who Said That?
"There is no external, objective, revealed standard writ in scripture or on tablets of stone that will govern our ethical behavior for all time."

These words come from the apostate Bishop, John Shelby Spong. As some of you pointed out, these words are part of Spong's call for a "new Reformation." Click here: A Call for a New Reformation

Someone who conveniently ignores Jesus' command to love your neighbor.
But hey, I am almost glad people say such nonsense as that, it motivates me to know "what I believe and why I believe it."
Were there things written on tablets of stone that were not in scripture?
I'll go with Crossan.
I have no idea where to begin, but having gone to hear Spong in a debate vs. James White, I think it was a great guess.
Another interesting guess "Lee n. field"
The quote has probably been stated by many a liberal Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran.
My guess is, the quote certainly did not originate with Joseph Smith. He liked the idea of authoritative tablets.
Any reason it couldn't be Mclaren, given the way he talks and writes?
The sad thing, for me anyway, is that there are tons of people out there who believe it as true when someone like Spong says things like this. I suppose this is somewhat of an indictment against those "Religious" groups where a man who doesn't know his Bible at all can become a Bishop.

He is a classic postmodernist who could care less about truth. I attended his debate w/ James White. It was no debate actually.
Each time White attempted to interact w/ Scripture, Spong called White a "fundamentalist" or "legalist" and then told his precious stories.
He might as well have been holding a teddy bear.
He struck me [IMHO] as one man who was scared to death. Scared to stand for Scripture's truths and scared to stand up to those who oppose Scripture.
