Who Said That?

A nutty Pentecostal. (Yes, I did not just repeat myself tautologically.)

This is probably wrong, but -- Agnes Sanford (d. 1982) -- key figure in the charismatic movement in the '60s. She was the daughter of a presbyterian missionary and the wife of an episcopal minister. She wrote a few books in which one of her themes was the charismatic use of the sacraments. The novel she wrote ("Lost Shepherd") was about an episcopal priest who learns from his girlfriend how to heal people with communion. Perhaps the minister {in the novel) wasn't paying attention at catechism (or in seminary) when articles XXV through XXXI (of the 39 Articles) were discussed.

Maybe if she (Agnes Sanford)had been reformed she would have known....

Question 65. Since then we are made partakers of Christ and all his benefits by faith only, whence does this faith proceed?

Answer: From the Holy Ghost, who works faith in our hearts by the preaching of the gospel, and confirms it by the use of the sacraments.

She would have gotten the same thing as a child from WSC (88-97).

I usually don't comment on these posts because I almost always google to see who it is. I won't give away who the person this quote is from, but I would like to add some information I found about this person. I almost gagged when I saw how this person is trying to commercialize communion and sell it as a health practice. Here is the blurb from an internet site:

For only $39.00 you can purchase:

An 8-piece Communion Set; which is ideal for travel!

This set is packaged in a black leather pouch with the Messianic Seal Emblem on the front, with Scripture verses inside. The set contains:

~ One holder with 2 stainless steel cups inside (3 pieces)

~ One holder to contain the bread (1 piece)

~ One holder with juice container and funnel inside (3 pieces)

You will alse receive the 70-page book, "The Meal That Heals".

The Biblical revelation contained in this book will not only challenge your spirit, but could possibly extend the days of your life!

I don't know, but I wonder under what church's authority this "communion" is being practiced and with which other gathered believers?

If Word and Sacrament are our only legitimate route to the metaphysical then the boundaries should be clearly defined as to what purposes the Word and Sacraments are used for. Mainly, for a clearer understanding of God's redemptive purposes and greater assurance for our faith. To claim that communion is to be used as a "weapon to attack sickness and bring healing to the lives of Christians" may qualify as taking communion in an unworthy manner and cause sickness or even death. Thank God for confessional standards and His graciousness towards us and our foibles.

I love this guy's overstuffed props. And when he wears Good Fella outfits (plush sweats, bracelets and pinky rings) to teach in the Holy Land, it's fantastic.

We're going to end up spoiling the surprise.

I recall being my jaw dropping, once upon a time a couple years back, at this individual's offhand bit of exegesis equating the "exceedingly great army" of Ezekiel's valley of dry bones prophecy with (ta da!) the Israeli Defense Force.

I was curious, so a took a peek at the internet too. My guess was wrong, but it occurs to me that this error which was propagated in the late '40's through early '80's is hardly different than what we have abroad today. There is nothing new under the sun -- I guess heresy comes into fashion and goes out, only to come back in again in a few decades.

What wisdom there is in adhering to and teaching the confessions from generation to generation.

Shouldn't all Catholics believe this, at least to some extent? I'll say His Holiness Benedict XVI.

OK OK, since I know who it is, I'm not going to say anything... other than, yeah, um, I can see why he gets your goat, Kim! (and it's not just the communion quote either). Wow.

Would like to inform all you skeptics...about 9 years ago I went on a quest seeking the face of God. I wanted to know if the Holy Spirit was still active, being I was partially raised in a religion where it was taught not to speak in tongues and be baptized in the Spirit. Well one day I was just singing and the Holy Pirit came upon me and I was baptized in tongues...Then I had some very serious blood disorders and sicknesses in my body, I was reading the bible one day and the Lord spoke to me and said, start taking communion and I will heal you. Well I never heard such, but being nieve as I was, I believed God and started doing it, as I did, I started repenting for things in my life I was never aware of that was sin...The Holy Spirit led me into truth...About three weeks into my communion, I was completely healed. I went to my Dr and I told her that God had healed me, she tested me and to this day by His Stripes I am healed. I taught my mother about it and she's old fashioned and isn't regular yet, but God is already beginning to heal her lungs and she has COPD a lung disease that's not curable by man but my GOD is faithful...So if you choose no to believe, I will pray for Jesus to help your unbelief...In communion with Christ daily, is where you will receive your healing, I pray God will heal you too...He is a genleman, and he will respect your will...
