Looking Back at 2007

Looking%20back.jpgNow that 2007 is nearly a memory, it might be interesting to look back upon some of the events of this past year.

The horrible killings at Virginia Tech was the top news story of the year.  Click here: Top news story: Virginia Tech killings - Yahoo! News

"Don't tase me bro" was the most memorable saying of the year.  Idaho senator Larry Craig and shock jock Don Imus also made the list.  Click here: Don't Tase Me, Bro tops '07 memorable quote list | Lifestyle | Living | Reuters

One list of top religion stories puts evangelical voters struggling to find a presidential candidate at the top, Click here: Top religion stories of 2007 (OneNewsNow.com), while Christianity Today's top ten starts with the Taliban killing Korean missionaries in Afghanistan.  Click here: Top Ten Stories of 2007 | Christianity Today | A Magazine of Evangelical Conviction

The top ten sports stories for 2007 include Brett Favre and the Little League World Series.  Click here: FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - 10 best sports stories of 2007

Those who died in 2007 can be found on the Wiki, Click here: Deaths in 2007 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, or in the NY Times.  Click here: Notable Deaths of 2007 - New York Times.  The list includes Jerry Falwell, D. James Kennedy, Ruth Graham, and of course, Tammy Faye.

Let's see. Bill Hybels admits Willow Creek's multitude of programs don't work. _Should_ have been a bigger story, at least in evangelicalism.

I spent an hour or so review the deaths of 2007 and this is what caught my attention:

The somewhat amusing death of the veterinarian who specialized in felines who died on a motorcycle avoiding a cat.

The woman who died of "water intoxication" drinking two gallons of water in a radio contest.

The number of professional wrestlers who committed suicide (Is there something about the business that makes people want to kill themselves or are people who are prone to suicide attracted to this business?)

The number of racehorses euthanized this year.

The reluctance of Americans to reveal a cause of death.

And how could we forget this "happening" in 2007...

The pronouncement: "All Calvinists should be premillennialists!"

Ahh 2007, one of my most memorable moments of 2007 came when I was visiting w/ family members on a vacation break.

I was actually told by Dispensationalist family members
"...well, our pastor really understands these things [prophecy]. We think you should really talk to him, he could help you."

When I attempted to merely highlight that the clear passages regarding the Second Coming such as 1 Th. 4 and 1 Cor. 15 do not make mention of any 1000 year reign to follow or a 7 year tribulation, I was simply shot down.
I was told [get this... it really shocked me!] "You deny the Second Coming just like RC Sproul does."

Oh brother, you know if we in the church are going to articulate someone's views [in this case RC Sproul] we owe it to them to know their view at least.

And then I mentioned that any time one thousand is mentioned it is always figurative. And if it is figurative in other places, why on earth do we think it would be literal in an apocalyptic genre depicting a series of visions no less, in a book like Revelation?

Oh well, so much for being taken seriously by family members who simply think I am an idiot because I departed the Pre-Trib, Pre-Mil camp about 13 years ago.
