Some Bizarre Stuff from Around the Web

Now this is just plain creepy . . .    But that won't prevent me from posting it!  You might think that in light of all the negative publicity surrounding the Roman priesthood and sex-scandals, someone would think better of this.   Click here: Priest organizes beauty contest for nuns - Faith- msnbc.com

Here's another reason to embrace Reformed theology.  This church is so noisy that the neighbors keep calling the police because of all the "cheering."  If it became Reformed, immediately the people would be so dour and quiet that the neighbors would be able sleep right through the services.  Oh, for the good ole days of Geneva Jigs!  Click here: Crown Point tells church to quiet down / nwi.com

This story reminds of the famous televangelist who actually gained a few pounds during his "40-day fast."  Muslims have figured out how to endure the Ramadan fast even if you lack the requisite self-control.   Click here: Turks turn to diet patches to ease Ramadan fasting - Yahoo! News

I knew it . . .  Cats are environmentally unfriendly and they are endangering one of the world's great eco-systems.  Like the comedian says, why give expensive "Gourmet" cat food to a creature who spends much of its time licking its own rear-end?  I wonder if Al Gore has a cat?  If he does, he's endangering the global fish supply.  Click here: LIVENEWS.com.au > Environment > Spoilt Western cats endangering global fish supply

I thought fasting was to consist of meditating and more reading of scripture. I don't think Muslims do that, from what I hear they skip two meals and eat more for the third meal. What is so hard about that? Especially when you know at night you are going to gorge yourself with food. That seems to defeat the purpose.

What is with all the cat bashing amongst the reformed? If it isn't you its the mutts over at Fide-O. And further more the behavior you described is also done by canines, not to mention dogs propensity for dragging their hindquarters over a rug. Cats were created by God to give him glory as were dogs can't we just praise him for giving us both?

What is a Geneva jig? Anything like a Charismatic jig? Hopping up and down and clapping? Please fill me in, I'm genuinely intrigued.

Genevan jigs are tunes from the Genevan Psalter (mostly composed by Louis Bourgeois (1510-1561)).

Originally they were sung only as melody (there appears to have been a controversy about using 4 part harmony in worship back then -- ah the simple days -- except for the persecution!)

They say you could be arrested in Paris if you were caught humming or whistling a Geneva tune on the streets.

The only English version of the Genevan Psalter in print today is the one by the Canadian Reformed Church, unless you count the 150 Psalms at the beginning of the 1987 CRC Psalter-Hymnal (they did arrange the tunes nicely).

Someone (The Canadian Reformed Church?) has made pdf files available of this Psalter in two parts (the Psalms proper and the Bible songs). I don't have the address for this, but I am sure it can be googled.

If you want to hear some of these tunes, go here and search around:

I went to a catholic university and knew many nuns - most of them were very nice people - but definitely not beauty contest material. The church probably never thought to ban something like this - it'd be like banning the sale of skunk perfume.
