Songs You Love to Hate

I recently overheard two people on the radio arguing about which song they felt was the worst song of all time.  Given the readership of this blog, I thought that might make for an interesting discussion here!

Top of the list for me (in terms of popular music) is Cool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie."  I hate that song, yet every time I hear it, it gets stuck in my head.

As for rock songs, tie goes to Black Oak Arkansas' "Jim Dandy" (I'm dating myself with this one--remember the video of this???) and Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law."  Just picturing Rob Halford sing gives me the heebeegeebees.

As for classical music, its got to be Ravel's "Bolero."  Too repetitive, too situationalized (if you get my drift).

As for hymns, its gotta be "He Lives."  I have my own lyrics to that one!

So, here are the categories for what is, in your opinion, the worst song (pop, rock, classical, hymn or Praise and worship).

Have fun!

John Lenon's "Imagine". It makes me grate my teeth every time. I cant't imagine a more idiotic song.

dw, that song - I have decided to follow Jesus - may have dubious theology, but there's still a neat bit in the Robert Duval movie "The Apostle" featuring the song - revivalism at its best, or worst, as you will.

Reg,

"You actually like Billy Joel and Neil Diamond? Do you also like show tunes?"

Only if they're good. Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita" score comes to mind.

But can anything good come from Nashville?

Pop: the tie-tle definitely would go to the roller skates one and the one about the cake in the rain (Macarthur park?) and prob. Seasons in the Sun and one with the words "Girl, you'll be a woman soon" or something. I like a lot of Neil Diamond but not that one (I think it is his). Funny N.D. sidenote: my sister though "Forever in Blue Jeans" was "Reverend Blue Jeans".

Anyway - there is a great little Dave Barry book about the worst songs. It will leave you rolling.

I feel the same way. The cure against his utopianism is to skip a few tracks to more skeptical tunes like "Cold Turkey," "Working Class Hero" or "Nobody Told Me" to name just several.

Where does country music fit in in all of this?

Although Zrim wondered if anything good can come out of Nashville.

Oh boy, you made me think of plenty, but I think the biggest one would be "Soften My Heart Lord"--especially the line that goes, "consume me with your holy fire." (Of course it does sound funny if you sing it to "Come on baby, light my fire," but that's another story.)

"Where does country music fit in in all of this?" There's a really awful country song called "Swingin'" that has got to be one of the worst ever.

How about "Dead skunk in the middle of the road"?

Callef,

Loudon Wainwright is out of San Francisco, not Nashville and "stinking to high heaven."

You guys are all wrong about Bolero! Anyone remember Torville & Dean's perfect 10's ice dance routine in the Olympics in a year that I cannot recall right now? I love Ravel's Bolero!

One 'country' worst that comes to mind is "Achy Breaky Heart", Billy Ray Cyrus.

"But can anything good come from Nashville?"

I used to think this...before 2001 and I actually started listening to country music. If you like classic rock, but don't like country...you simply havn't given 'New Country' a fair chance. Check out the guitar work of Brad Paisley or Keith Urban. And Trace Adkins wrote a song that describes exactly what is good about GOOD country music...

"They're songs about me, and who I am,
Songs about lovin' and livin' and good hearted women and family and God."

I love country music! There's good and there's bad, of course. And I also kind of like the "Dead Skunk" song for some strange reason - it's just that once it gets in your head, it won't go away! :)

My husband's choice for worst song:

"Honey" (Bobby Goldsboro?) I think he might be right.

Praise and Worship so many to choose from I lift my Hands up,
Hymns I Have decided top to Follow Jesus.

Why are you guys knocking AC/DC and Billy Joel? Eighties have some good music and Artist. Next thing you guys are going to do is knock Elton John.
