This was one of the Founding Fathers, but I don't recall which one. I read this quote in conjunction with the proposition that the USA was founded as a Christian nation.

If it was one of the founding fathers, I'd guess either Jefferson or John Adams?
Sam Adams was certainly a Christian, so if he said it, it wouldn't have been tongue in cheek.
