It Was the Royal Wedding for Pete's Sake . . .

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, conducted much of the royal wedding.  On such an important occasion, viewed by billions around the globe, you would think a trip to the barbershop earlier in the day would have been in order.  On a day when not a hair, a pleat, or a medallion, was out of place in the entire city of London, here's the Archbishop looking like he's been living in his car.  A particular scene from The Princess Bride comes to mind.

At the very least, the Archbishop could have trimmed those massive eyebrows!

It was the royal wedding for Pete's sake!

Mark and Pastor Chris, what does the gospel have to do with a creation ordinance? And since when was a royal wedding expected to be the place where the gospel should be preached just because it has the attention of billions?

Since I am Anglican, I guess I will weigh in on this. I left the ECUSA in 2004 over the Robertson issue. I'm not terribly proud of that moment today. The presiding bishop is another matter. She is not even Christian. The amount of unofficial regret I hear from clergy over her is amazing. I have returned to the ECUSA recently due to the problem of the best available option in my area.

I recently reviewed the 39 Articles on my blog for some friends and what was interesting to me is that they are incredibly Calvinistic. At least they are until you get to all the funny stuff about the royalty. There does not seem to be any two kingdom distinction in the Anglican church which is born out not only by the English royalty situation, but also in any discussion of theology on just about any passage where you need to talk about it.

After Bible study last week, I suggested to the rector that the new reformation for the ECUSA should be a return to the 39 Articles. They worked well for one reformation. They would work pretty well for the current era. You would just need to clean up the bit about the royalty and teach them a little Luther.

The Church of England is Calvinist in its confessional statement (The 39 Articles) and it's liturgy, especially the superb communion service in the "Book of Common Prayer". For a defence of this see Lee Gatiss "The True Profession of the Gospel: Augustus Toplady and Reclaiming our Foundations" (Latimer Trust 2010), available here:

http://www.latimertrust.org/tpg.htm

Lee is editing "The Reformed Evangelical Anglican Library". They have already published the collected sermons of George Whitefield, another Anglican Calvinist, and hope to reprint Toplady's "A Defence of the Historic Calvinism of the Church of England".

And remember that William Perkins was an Anglican, and the Church of England sent a delegation to the synod of Dort!

Pastor Chris: Didn't know about the Reformed Anglicans caving on the gay "marriage" issue. This is sad. Will there now be a new break-away Denomination? Maybe Packer had an issue with just his local congregation, which is, I believe, in Vancouver, where things are more Liberal anyway. Also, I'm not up on the "via media" thing. Will look into that. Thanks for setting me straight.
HAHA I liked it! Sort of what John the Baptist might have looked like if someone had thrown a stupid robe and hat over him and asked him to perform a wedding ceremony?

I also enjoyed the rendition of "I Was Glad" (taken from Psalm 122) which was sung to glorious imagery: the immaculate bride coming forth to her prince...(sigh) magnificent!

The "royals" are nothing to applaud. Yea, they got married, but not before living together--with this bishop's blessing:

"The Archbishop of York backed Prince William and Kate Middleton’s decision to live together before marriage, saying that many modern couples want to “test the milk before they buy the cow”.

Dr John Sentamu argued that the royal couple’s public commitment to live their lives together today would be more important than their past. "

My Pastor, Ron Svendsen of Valley Presbyterian Church had the opportunity of
a lifetime when one of our dear brother's died in the line of duty as a firefighter, Glenn Allen. Glenn's wife insisted that our pastor be able to
preach at the Official Firefighter's Funeral, at Our Lady of the Angels, in front of 4500 people, almost all firefirefighter personel and it was also nationally televised. It was absolutely what Pastor Svendsen preaches to us, Sunday in and Sunday out, in season and out of season.

Her is a YouTube of his message, introduced by my brother-in-law:

By the way, Pastor Svensen has Great Hair to boot......
