This Week's White Horse Inn

The Gospel According to Isaiah (Part Four)

In chapter 11 of his prophecy, Isaiah writes that, “[t]he wolf shall dwell with the lamb.” Many interpret this literally as referring to some utopian period way off in the distant future. But is this really what Isaiah’s imagery is pointing to? What does he mean when he says that a shoot shall come forth “from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit”? On this program the hosts will discuss these questions and more as they interact with chapters 10 through 25 of the book of Isaiah.

I'm Pleased to Announce . . .

My new commentary on First Corinthians in the Lectio Continua series (from Tolle Lege Press) is soon to be released!  The editor tells me it will be available in January or February.  I'll post purchase/ordering info just as soon as I get it.

Here are the endorsements:

Kim Riddlebarger, a trusted pastor-scholar, and one of the premier exegetes and expositors of our day, has given the Church a gift with this excellent commentary on First Corinthians. In these fine expositions we not only learn about the thorny and complex challenges that faced the church at Corinth, we are also taught the Spirit-inspired diagnoses and remedies dispensed by the Apostle Paul–– powerful, Christ-centered truth that applies as much today as it did in first century Corinth. I commend this volume to the Church with pastoral urgency and absolute confidence."

Michael A. Milton, Ph.D., Chancellor/CEO, The James M. Baird Jr. Chair of Pastoral Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary

Having shared and sat under the ministry of Kim Riddlebarger for many years, I am delighted to see the fruit of his faithful labors reach a wider audience.  Combining attention to exegetical detail with decades of pastoral experience, this commentary will reward generously with its unique insights into this wonderful epistle.

Michael S. Horton, Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California, Host of the White Horse Inn talk show, and Editor-in-Chief of Modern Reformation magazine

First Corinthians is a book that has long been neglected by Reformed commentators. That is why I am so glad that Kim Riddlebarger has provided the church with this exegetically-sensitive and doctrinally-sound exposition. Riddlebarger handles the letter’s difficult issues with care and pastoral sensitivity. In addition, he models for the Church what faithful exposition should be. This second installment in the Lectio Continua series is a welcome addition to any Christian’s shelf!

Guy Prentiss Waters, Professor of New Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, MS

This Week's White Horse Inn

The Gospel According to Isaiah (Part Three)

In this section of the book of Isaiah, we see the beginning of Isaiah’s prophetic call. Though he has already pronounced the covenantal “woes” against unfaithful Israel, here we see him exclaim, “Woe is me!” when confronted with God’s infinite holiness and majesty. The hosts evaluate the significance of this event along with numerous messianic prophecies that begin to appear in chapters 5 through 9 on this edition of White Horse Inn.

Why an 86 Trillion Dollar Debt Is Not the Worst of Our Problems

White Horse Inn Producer, Shane Rosenthal, posted an insightful essay on the White Horse Inn blog.  Shane reminds us that our nation's fiscal problems (serious as they are) pale in light the debt we owe to God because of our sins.

A Fitting Tribute to Rod Rosenbladt

Concordia University Magazine recently published an article about Rod Rosenbladt's huge influence upon the current Concordia faculty.  After calling our dear friend, colleague, and mentor, Dr. Rod Rosenbladt, the "magnificent Dane," Mike Horton (on the White Horse Inn blog) says the following of Rod . . .

Way back when, Kim Riddlebarger introduced me to Rod Rosenbladt, one of his professors at Simon Greenleaf School of Law.  Twenty-five years later, here we are still doing “theology on tap” together at the White Horse Inn.  I can’t calculate the gifts that God has given me through the magnificent Dane over these many years.  For his insights, challenges, conviction—and most of all, his friendship in the gospel, I’m greatly in Rod’s debt and I know that Kim and Ken feel that way as well.  We’re delighted that Concordia Today Magazine has published a tribute to Rod’s work in its latest issue.

Rod is truly a great man, a dear friend, and if you know him, you know that he has trained a whole generation of scholars to defend the Christian faith and Lutheran orthodoxy.  It is wonderful to see so many of his former students--now fellow faculty members with Ph.D.s--standing behind him.  A great legacy indeed!

But he'll always be "Dad" Rod to me.  I recount a bit about Rod's tremendous influence on my life Here.

Congrats Rod!  Well deserved!
