The World Changed Seventy Years Ago Today

Seventy years ago today (September 1, 1939), the first shots of World War Two were fired at 4:45 a.m. by the outdated German Battleship Schleswig-Holstein at Polish military installations in the port city of Gdansk.

Anchored in Gdansk on what was supposed to be a "show the flag" friendly visit, the Schleswig-Holstein suddenly opened fire on Polish military installations in its host's port--a dastardly act of treachery.  Moments later German armies swarmed across the Polish border and German aircraft began attacking Polish airfields and barracks.

The world changed forever.

This Week's White Horse Inn

The Experience Economy

There is a new trend in the business world. Offer your customers rich experiences, and they'll keep coming back. But is this a good model for churches to adopt? On this edition of the White Horse Inn Michael Horton talks with business writer James Gilmore about his books, The Experience Economy, and Authenticity.

A Big Weekend at Christ Reformed

Friday Evening (8/28) Ken Samples begins a highly-anticipated Academy Series, "Learning Skills 101: Learning How To Learn (Part 1)” using Adler's great book "How to Read a Book."  Audio will be posted here once I get it.  For more information, Click here: Christ Reformed Info - The Latest News - Academy Class - Friday, August 28

Saturday Morning (8/29), Christ Reformed is holding a summer picnic (10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.), which includes a silent auction with some really cool stuff (the proceeds go to our benevolence fund) and a softball game between the deacons and the elders.  Click here: Christ Reformed Info - The Latest News - Church Picnic – Saturday, August 29

August 29 is also my birthday and I hit the big "55."  I'll be an official "geezer" and suddenly all the debate over health care reform seems much less theoretical.  I can't wait to beg the death panel for a few more days.

Sunday, August 30, I'm back in the pulpit (if I don't hurt myself during the softball game on Saturday) and return to my series on Ephesians.  I'll post audio from the sermons as I get it from the church techies.  Click here: Christ Reformed Info - This Week's Bulletin

If you live in So Cal, come out and join us!  I'd love to meet you.

Bynum's Back!

Former prophetess now dubbed "Christian Celebrity" Juanita Bynum is back in action.  After her celebrated divorce from Bishop Thomas Weeks III and a dust-up with the IRS, she's going to "preach" (more like scream) at a "Revival" in Tampa.  1,700 are expected!  She's ready for ministry again after "a re-birthing and redefining."  Maybe that's what I need.  Click here: Christian celebrity Juanita Bynum returns after delinquent tax and marriage problems - St. Petersburg Times

Meanwhile, Rev. Debra Hafner thinks the meaning of the recent ELCA decision regarding gay clergy overlooks single clergy who shouldn't be forced to miss out on sex just because they are not married.  "All of this is excellent news for same-sex couples, of course, but the emphasis on `committed, lifelong relationships' leaves out the single minister, the divorced minister, the widowed minister -- whether gay, straight, or bisexual -- who must still adhere to a standard of celibacy unless their partner status changes."  Hey, everybody's doing it, right?  Click here: Rev. Songs You Love to Hate

I recently overheard two people on the radio arguing about which song they felt was the worst song of all time.  Given the readership of this blog, I thought that might make for an interesting discussion here!

Top of the list for me (in terms of popular music) is Cool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie."  I hate that song, yet every time I hear it, it gets stuck in my head.

As for rock songs, tie goes to Black Oak Arkansas' "Jim Dandy" (I'm dating myself with this one--remember the video of this???) and Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law."  Just picturing Rob Halford sing gives me the heebeegeebees.

As for classical music, its got to be Ravel's "Bolero."  Too repetitive, too situationalized (if you get my drift).

As for hymns, its gotta be "He Lives."  I have my own lyrics to that one!

So, here are the categories for what is, in your opinion, the worst song (pop, rock, classical, hymn or Praise and worship).

Have fun!

"Learning Skills 101" -- A New Academy Series

You are invited to join us Friday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim when Professor Ken Samples begins his new Academy series entitled “Learning Skills 101: Learning How To Learn (Part 1).”

This will be a great class for parents, home-schoolers, high school and college students, and for anyone who loves to learn!

Here is Ken's course synopsis . . .

Class synopsis: The motto for the United Negro College Fund sends chills up my spine whenever I hear it. Its foreboding yet challenging message declares: “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” For the Christian, however, the stakes are even higher. A human mind made in the image and likeness of an infinite, eternal, and personal God (Gen. 1:26-27) is a fortiori (Latin: “with greater force,” “all the more”) a terrible thing to waste.

The Study Skills 101: Learning How To Learn class is specifically offered to help believers sharpen their thinking, reading, and speaking skills. This course can be directly helpful to teachers, parents (especially homeschool parents), and students, particularly adult students who want to engage in a lifelong journey of intellectual discovery and learning. This class can serve as a fun and challenging opportunity to clear the mental cobwebs that too often accumulate with the passage of time and age. All educational levels can benefit from the content of this class. Come and learn the enduring insights of famed philosopher and educator Mortimer J. Adler by studying his best selling work How to Read a Book. -- Professor Kenneth Samples.

Who Said That?

"We, as Christians, humbly seek to join Muslims in this observance of Ramadan as a God-honoring expression of peace, fellowship, and neighborliness. Each of us will have at least one Muslim friend who will serve as our partner in the fast. These friends welcome us in the same spirit of peace, fellowship, and neighborliness."
